Chesterfield Swimming Club was established in 1983 and is now North Derbyshire’s largest competitive swimming club. Our programme offers a full range of opportunities from Learn to Swim for adults and children of all ages from two upwards all the way through to National level competition for elite swimmers.
In December 2011 Chesterfield Swimming Club became the Hub club for Derbyshire’s County Performance Swim Squad Derventio eXcel, offering additional training opportunities to elite level swimmers from clubs based in the North of Derbyshire and providing a full performance pathway within the club for Chesterfield swimmers.
In December 2012 Chesterfield Swimming Club entered a partnership with Chesterfield Borough Council to provide a Learn to Swim pathway in the Chesterfield area which strives to deliver excellence across all Learn to Swim centres within the partnership.
We operate out of Queen’s Park Sports Centre in Chesterfield but also use Pond’s Forge in Sheffield, Healthy Living Centre in Staveley, Brookfield School and Highfield Hall School, which is our Learn to Swim base.
We have 400 members of which over 300 are swimming members between the ages of 2 and 72.
We have many other members who support the swimmers in a wide variety of ways. Some are professional teachers and coaches. Most, however, are voluntary helpers of which some form the committee who run the club, others are officials required for running swimming events, some are lifeguards, chaperones, website managers, squad reps, team managers, etc. but all of which make the club successful and give it a great team and family based atmosphere.
A Message from Head Coach Mark Tanner
At Chesterfield Swimming Club we strive for excellence at every level of the sport. We are always looking to develop talent and produce elite level swimmers. We want every member of the club to reach and surpass their potential achieving personal goals along the way.
We have a great dedicated team of coaches, teachers and voluntary helpers which help make the club so successful and the continued improvement in results is down to the hard work and commitment of those people.
The whole team has a tremendous work ethic, we can see that every swimmer in every squad is hungry for success and this shows as we continue to grow and improve as a club, quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in Derbyshire.
We are always looking for new ways to improve and grow as a club and I strongly believe that there is still a lot to come from Chesterfield Swimming Club at all levels. There is a bright future ahead.
Mark Tanner Head Coach
Chesterfield Swimming Club is the first club I have been head coach at. After starting in October 2011 we have enjoyed great success and a rise to new levels of accomplishment and I strongly believe there is a lot more to come from this club.
I started off as a swimmer myself at Swindon Dolphin ASC qualifying for GB National Championships for six consecutive years from the age of 13. I always had a great passion for the sport and was coached by Andi Manley who began to mentor me as I headed down the path of becoming a professional coach.
In 2007 I started at Loughborough University where I studied for a degree in Applied Sports Science. Whilst studying I spent my spare time at the pool assisting with Loughborough ITC and GB coaches Ian Armiger and Ben Titley, coaching multiple GB swimmers, Olympic qualifiers and world record holders. In vacations I spent time at my old club Swindon Dolphin ASC which culminated in a successful spell as interim Head Coach at the age of 20 where I took nine Age Group, Youth and Senior swimmers to the National Championships.
After graduating I spent time working once again with friend and mentor Andi Manley before securing the Head Coach role at Chesterfield Swimming Club. Since then we have re-introduced the performance pathway in the North-East of the county and I am currently the Chesterfield-Hub coach for Derventio eXcel. In September 2012 I was selected as a coach for the England Talent Level 1 programme and in January 2013 I gained my Level 3 Certificate for Coaching Swimming at Performance standard.
From the experience I have gained being around a number of great swimming programmes I have developed my own philosophies as a coach. I believe strongly in a technique first approach with a strong emphasis on being able to swim FAST while maintaining that technique. I also believe that it is important to coach the person and not just the swimmer. Swimming is tremendously demanding and in order for the athlete to reach their potential they must hold the personality attributes required to do so. Our team very much exhibits those traits and for all the hard work we put in the rewards are worth it.
Chesterfield Swimming Club is going from strength to strength with achievements such as gaining promotion to Arena League Premier Division (East Midlands) at the first time of asking in December 2012. I have a great team of coaches and volunteer helpers surrounding me which make this continued success possible and as we continue to put in the hard work we continue to rise.
