Regional Squad
Lead Coach: Dawn Adsetts

Focus: Learning to Train

Athletes are invited to join Regional Squad having achieved the aims and progression criteria for County Squad or via a trial if transferring from another club.

Commitment to excellent training attendance is an essential part of the Regional Squad plan, although it is still beneficial for athletes to participate and compete in a mix of sports and activities. Training is more strutured at this level with athletes introduced to periods of technique development, skill acquisition, aerobic cacpacity and speed development.

Learning how to train effectively is vital for future progression, athletes must understand how to move with greater efficiency and control under pressure before increasing the volume and intensity of their training. This is achieved by continuing to develop all 4 strokes, using more complex drills, and exposing athletes to a more demanding competition programme. We are looking for athletes who are coachable, follow instructions well, confident enough to make changes, and willing to learn from experience.

Aims
  • To have a full set of ranked times up to and including 1500m Freestyle.
  • Athletes demonstrate excellent team work in both training and competition.
  • Representation and success ar Regional Championships.

Progression Criteria

Progression from Regional Squad is to either Junior National Squad or Junior and Youth Squad.

All athletes must understand and demonstrate the clubs CORE values appropriate to their age and level.

To be considered for a move to Junior National Squad, athletes should have achieved the Regional Squad aims and be able to complete the following benchmark training sets:

  • 20 x 100m Freestyle @ 1:35, Holding 1:25 or faster throughout set.
  • 6 x 200m Individual Medley @ 3:45, Holding 3:20 or faster throughout set.
  • 10 x 100m Kick (Any Stroke) to be completed in 20 minutes or less.

All of the above sets must be completed with relaxed, rhythmic and balanced strokes, all underwater phases and turns must be race legal and of consistently high standard. Athletes should demonstrate appropriate lane etiquette, hydration and recovery strategies, and ability to work from the pace clock wherever possible.

We appreciate that some athletes may not be able to complete the benchmark training sets but may have outstanding ability in one or more areas. To ensure these athletes are not held back, any athlete achieving 400 World Aquatic Points in a short or long course event will automatically be considered for progression.
